In the Deep
Works of art plunge into the unknown as I paint a personal narrative as a way of reckoning life’s circumstances. Using extreme value shifts between deep passages of dark colors surfacing into light, I process the death of my father, a traumatic pregnancy, a worldwide pandemic, and civil unrest. This painting process mimics how memory and trauma are deeply rooted in the individual psyche, and explores states of mind as intuitive marks, discovered and layered, charting the mental and emotional shifts that occurred as each one of these situations rolled over me. I deal with the shock of motherhood and new beginnings, the strange phenomenon of having the world change before me, and getting lost in the confusion of new realities.
